chapter fifteen

The next day, Paige felt a twinge of misgiving as she stood outside the modern offices of Hammersmith Capital. Maybe she shouldn’t have invited herself for a visit. Now that she thought about it, he hadn’t even seemed that enthusiastic. But she’d had to come. He was simply being jaded about his workplace, she was sure. That happened to people: they got so accustomed to their familiar circumstances and surroundings that they no longer saw the good in them. Maybe she could teach him how to do the morning gratitude ritual, like she did.

He probably wouldn’t try it, though. She could imagine him making some joke about it. Not one that would hurt her feelings. He was good at being funny without being mean, and it always made her want to tease him right back.

She went into the lobby and walked up to the receptionist. “Hi, I’m here to see Dylan Cain?”

He nodded. “Sure. Do you know the number of your conference room?”

Conference room? “I, uh, I’m not in a meeting with him.” The receptionist gave her a blank look. “I’m a friend. I’m just stopping by.”

“What’s your name?”

“Paige Reynolds.”

Unease coiled in her belly. This was quite a bit more formal than she’d been expecting. Somehow, she’d imagined that someone would casually point in the direction of Dylan’s office, and she’d go over and say hello.

The receptionist picked up the phone and dialed. In a moment he said, “Hey Dylan, Paige Reynolds is here, she wants to see you?” After a pause, he answered, “Yeah.” What had Dylan asked him? “Okay.” The man hung up the phone and opened a drawer. “Here’s a visitor’s badge. Dylan’s office is on the left, three doors past the kitchen.”

Paige went to the door and flashed the badge in front of the device next to it. Nothing happened.

“You have to swipe it,” the receptionist said. “Then clip it on.”

She let herself in, and as the door shut behind her, she considered where exactly to clip the ID. Her dress, the purple one with little orange pumpkins, had no pockets. She attached the badge to her purse strap.

A guy in the first cubicle looked up. “Can I help you?”

“I was dropping by to say hi to Dylan.”

He raised his eyebrows. After a quick glance around him, he said in a quieter tone, “They don’t exactly encourage visitors around here.”

“Really? He said it would be okay. But I’ll make it quick.”

The guy shrugged and returned to whatever he was doing on the computer.

Paige bit her lip. I’ve made a mistake. If Dylan’s workplace frowned on visitors, why had he agreed to her coming by? She hadn’t known him that long, but he seemed like a consummate rule-follower.

Confused, she continued down the corridor. In one of the offices she passed, a man talking on the phone stared at her. A woman who passed her also gave her a curious look. Paige wouldn’t have felt more out of place or conspicuous if she were wearing her Halloween costume.
